Company Description

Nominum was founded in 1999 to develop BIND 9 and ISC DHCP3 for the Internet Software Consortium (ISC). While working on these projects, Nominum recognized that no commercial-grade DNS and DHCP solutions existed, and undertook to create them.Leveraging the expertise of Dr. Paul Mockapetris, the inventor of the DNS and their Chairman and Chief Scientist, and Ted Lemon, author of the first widely used DHCP implementation, Nominum released two products: Caching Name Server (CNS) and Dynamic Configuration Server (DCS)-the first ever commercial-grade DNS and DHCP products in 2002.Nominum's DNS is fundamental to today's Internet structure. Their DNS services involve 30% of global web traffic and support 500 million internet users worldwide. In 2006, with the release of Vantio, Nominum expanded the scope of DNS from a service to a platform. Vantio's current incarnation consists of an intelligent DNS system that combines advanced caching DNS with real-time monitoring and alerts to enable sophisticated query analysis. Vantio features multiple layers of security that not only protect the Vantio server from attack, but also protect the transmission path and ensure the integrity of domain information. It also incorporates an extensible layer of policy software modules, so that network owners can use the DNS infrastructure to provide additional services to their subscribers.Nominum's influence spread in 2008, when security researcher Dan Kaminsky discovered a DNS vulnerability that threatened to shut down the Internet. Owners of other solutions faced months of exposure to the vulnerability, as well as patching and unplanned maintenance. Nominum assumed a leadership role in responding to the problem, and Nominum's own customers experienced no downtime. In 2009 Nominum launched SKYE, a hosted network services offering. Most recently, Nominum has been developing new DNS-based security and analytics suites, comprehensive solutions for mobile providers, and embedded DNS engines for hardware appliances.
