Motorola Greenpoint Kermit

Greenpoint was a mobile telephone network of the PTT Telecom (now KPN) in the Netherlands. It started in May 1992. It was intended as a cheap alternative to the expensive car telephone. The handset phone of Greenpoint called GreenHopper. In the early days the name Kermit was used to Character Muppet Kermit the Frog. The cost of the license Henson proved so high that an extension was not an option. Thus, it was stopped by the name of Kermit. At these locations with a Green Point Station, one could call, but can not receive calls. In order to be still accessible, often a pager was used. Kermit was also with built-in pager available. At the height of its existence, in 1996, Greenpoint had 60,000 subscribers. In 1998, this number had fallen to 20,000. Greenpoint was terminated on January 1, 1999.
