Betty Jennings

One of the original six programmers of the ENIAC computer, Betty Jean Jennings (later known as Jean Bartik) helped lay the groundwork for modern computing during a pioneering era in the field. She began her career at the University of Pennsylvania, first manually calculating ballistics trajectories and then using ENIAC to perform that work.

Working alongside Betty Holberton, Ruth Teitelbaum, Kathleen Antonelli, Marlyn Meltzer, and Frances Spence, Bartik and her colleagues developed and codified many of the fundamentals of programming. Because ENIAC was the first computer of its kind, their work had no precedent to draw from.

After ENIAC, she went on to contribute to BINAC and UNIVAC, and worked across a variety of technical companies as a writer, manager, engineer, and programmer. The default theme of the content-management framework Drupal is named "Bartik" in her honor.
