Bio/Description

Developer of FORMAC, the first widely used computer language for symbolic manipulation of mathematical formulas, Sammet spent 27 years at IBM where she created it.

She received her B.A. in Math from Mount Holyoke College in 1948 and her M.A. in Math from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1949. She was also a member of the subcommittee which created COBOL. Sammet served as president of the ACM from 1974 to 1976.
