Bio:
Mark Legg is currently the Director, Information Services at Flinders University. He is responsible for management of 70 staff involved in support of academic computing, management information systems, telecommunications, networking, printing, and copyright. The role of Director is of a general management nature and Mark has also acted as Deputy Manager of the Financial Services Division of the University for a three year period in addition to his technology role.
Mark has over 40 years experience in the tertiary education sector both as an academic and as an administrator. His first IT-related position was as a Teaching Fellow in the Computer Centre at Monash University in 1967 where he taught some of the first computer science courses at that university. He has held the senior IT position at Flinders University for 34 years during which time he has seen huge changes in the higher education sector with ever-growing challenges for provision of IT services.
His experience covers a wide range of activities including systems programming, telecommunications, compiler design and implementation, computer centre management, research and development work with a US computer manufacturer in database software design, management of a hospital computing services group and many consulting assignments covering systems and software selection, post-implementation reviews, tenders and strategic planning. Mark has a long-standing interest in the social and community aspects of IT, with a special interest in the appropriate use of technology at all levels of education.
Mark holds an honours degree in Physics from the University of Tasmania and a Master of Science from Monash University. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery and the I.E.E.E. Computer Society and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Mark’s interests outside of work include music (as a violin/viola player and member of the Flinders Investigators Chamber Music Group), tennis and golf (for which there has been almost no time for some years).
