Through its subsidiary Western Wireless International, the company owns interests in mobile telephone joint ventures in Iceland, Ireland, Ghana, Haiti, Croatia, Georgia, Latvia, Bolivia, and Côte d'Ivoire, serving approximately 320,000 customers. Western Wireless was founded in 1988 and is based in Bellevue, Washington. The company was merged with Alltel Corporation in August 2005. After the merger, Alltel sold Western Wireless' international assets.
