Bio/Description

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1941, his father passed away in 1942. His mother remarried in 1946 and his family moved to the Bronx. In 1955 he began attending the Bronx High School of Science and was there until 1958. This experience gave him an interest in math, science and technology. From there he went to the University of Michigan at the age of 17. Unfortunately, he was only there for a year and a half and was asked to leave. In 1961 he returned to New York and attended NYU summer school. He got married and dropped out of school and began working at the Bulova Watch Company doing market research. Bulova purchased a 1401 computer and he became interested in that. He approached the head of what they called the IBM Department and asked how he could become involved with this computer. He was given the classic IBM Programmer Aptitude Test, on which he did very well and was told he could get a job working there. Instead he decided that if he was going to be in that business, there was only one company to work for, and that was IBM. He went to IBM?s World Headquarters in New York City, but the work he was interested in doing was done in White Plains, and he didn?t have transportation. So he decided to take what kind of work he could get in New York City. He secured a job as a second shift tab operator trainee, operating tabulating equipment He rapidly moved from second shift tab operator trainee to first shift tab operator, and then got transferred in 1962 to New Jersey, where he worked at what was then, Supplies Division Headquarters and became a computer operator, running 1401 computers. Then he became a programmer and was sent to programming school. In 1963 he became a programmer at Supplies Division Headquarters. His official title was Senior Programming Technician. The highest programmer title one could have was Senior Programmer, but that required a college degree. After he was transferred to New Jersey, he began attending night school, but was then transferred to Armonk, N.Y. He eventually graduated with a B.A. degree from New York University in 1978 with honors. He is now on the board of the NYU faculty of Arts of Sciences. From 1968 to 1985, he was Chairman and CEO of Software Design Associates, a systems development firm that grew to 600 people, which was sold to AGS Computers Inc. In 1986 he purchased Money Management Systems, Inc. (MMS) from Ziff-Davis. MMS sold software and services to banks and broker-dealers for securities trading activities. In 1989 MMS was sold to Sungard Inc. In 1989, he founded Zeitech, Inc., a company which provided computer implementation professionals through its five national offices. Under his direction, Zeitech appeared twice on Inc. Magazine's 500 List of America's fastest growing companies and was sold in January 1996 to Career Horizons, Inc. From 1990 through 1994, he served as Chairman and CEO of Image Business Systems Corp., a company that provided document management and workflow software. He is a founder, and has been a General Partner of Hudson Ventures since 1996. He previously served on the Boards of many of Hudson's portfolio companies, and managed Hudson's investment in Bigfoot Interactive, prior to its sale to Alliance Data Systems. Currently, he serves on the Board of Hudson's portfolio company, QualityHealth. He was the founder of OPCENTER, LLC, a privately held company that provided help desk and computer operations services, and the founder and Chairman of Lexstra PLC, a London-based consulting company. He is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is also a Trustee of the Arbitrage Fund and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of New York University. He was most recently elected to the Board of Trustees of the Montefiore Medical Center. He is the past Chairman of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. He is also a member of the Board of Overseers of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the Faculty of Arts and Science at New York University, and the Arbitrage Fund, and is a Trustee of the Charles Babbage Foundation.
