Bio/Description
A Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, she is currently the department's Vice Chair. Her research focuses on mobile networking, specifically multimedia, monitoring, advanced service support, and solutions for developing and underdeveloped regions. She is the founder and Director of the Mobility Management and Networking (MOMENT) Laboratory. Currently, there are two primary research emphases of the Lab. The first of these is deployment, measurement, and modeling of wireless networks. The second research emphasis of the MOMENT Lab is on the development of wireless network solutions suitable to the constraints of developing and underdeveloped regions of the world, such as rural Africa. She is the author of over 100 technical papers and has served on over 60 program committees for networking conferences. She served as the TPC Co-Chair of ACM MobiCom 2005, IEEE SECON 2005, and ACM MobiHoc 2007, and as the TPC Area Chair of IEEE Infocom 2008. She is currently on the steering committee of the ACM Networked Systems in Developing Regions (NSDR) Workshop, the editorial board of the IEEE Pervasive Magazine, and is serving as a guest editor for the IEEE Pervasive Magazine special issue on Pervasive Information and Communication Technologies for Developing Regions. Elizabeth is the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award, and a 2002 MIT Technology Review 100 award, awarded to the world's top young investigators. She is also an ACM Distinguished Scientist. Among her many publications are: "Network Traffic Locality in a Rural African Village", Proceedings of the International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD), 2012, with David L. Johnson, and Gertjan van Stam; and VillageCell: "Cost Effective Cellular Connectivity in Rural Areas", Proceedings of the International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD), 2012, with Abhinav Anand and Veljko Pejovic.
