50 Years of Programming In 1957, the military draft was very active, so instead of waiting to be drafted at an importune time, right out of high school, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps, to have some influence over my destiny. Through some luck and some good high school math skills, I was assigned to work in the new area then called Data Processing. Machines were used to read cards and do calculations for science, business, and government problems.
