Bio:
Bio: Born in Russia in 1921, Professor Boris Nikolaevich Malinovsky is a veteran of World War II. He graduated from the Ivanovo Energy Institute in 1950, and completed his graduate studies at Electrotechnical Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1953. In the early 1950s, he developed original magnetic amplifier-based triggers and ferrite-diode circuits for the MESM, the first electronic digital computer in continental Europe, constructed in Kiev under the supervision of Academician S.A. Lebedev. In 1955-1958, Malinovsky designed a specialized computer for ground-based radar data processing and an airborne digital control computer for aviation. In 1958-1962, he served as chief designer of the Dnepr, the first Soviet digital transistor-based multi-purpose control computer. The Dnepr was mass-produced in 1962-1972; a total of nearly 500 production control and other control systems were implemented in the Soviet Union based on the Dnepr computers. Malinovsky later served as deputy director of the Academic Computer Center and division head and deputy director for research of the Institute of Cybernetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He is the author of 12 books and over 200 articles on computer technology and the history of computing. Over the years he received numerous honors: the Gold Medal at the Moscow National Economic Exhibition (for the design and construction of the Dnepr computer), the State Prize of Ukraine (twice), the Vernadsky Award, the Lebedev Award, and the Glushkov Award for contributions to computing.
