Founding Director of the Institute for Computational Sustainability at Cornell University, Gomes was a Portuguese-American computer scientist noted for pioneering work in developing computational methods to address challenges in sustainability.

Her research spanned a broad range of artificial intelligence and computer science topics, including constraint reasoning, mathematical optimization, and randomization techniques for exact search methods. She also contributed to algorithm selection, multi-agent systems, and game theory.

Her work in computational sustainability addressed ecological conservation, rural resource mapping, and pattern recognition for materials science.
