Committee

The Editorial Committee is responsible for what the IT History Society publishes and how it sounds. Its work centers on three channels: the monthly newsletter, our social media, and the blog on ithistory.org.

The newsletter

Every month we send a newsletter to members and subscribers. Editorial plans and edits each issue, working closely with the Honor Committee, which chooses that month’s honorees and writes their profiles.

Social media

Editorial writes and schedules our posts on Bluesky and LinkedIn: announcements, highlights from the catalog, and clips from our live events.

The blog

Every article must meet an academic standard. Claims are sourced, quotations are attributed, images are used with permission, and history is presented in context. Editorial supports authors and reviews each article before publication, whoever wrote it.

What the committee does

  • Plans each newsletter issue and keeps the editorial calendar.
  • Writes, edits, and schedules our social posts.
  • Supports blog authors and reviews every article against our standards before it goes live.
  • Reviews stories, memories, and photos that members send us for the newsletter, social media, or the blog. Contributions attached to records in the catalog are handled by the Curation Committee and its co-curators.
  • Runs short community prompts that invite members to share what they remember, such as a photo of an early system with the question “What do you recall about this one?”
  • Recruits and supports volunteer writers, with simple guidelines on length, sourcing, and image rights.
  • Sets our publishing approach across email, social media, the website, and Discord.

Internally we sometimes size pieces as Bits, Bytes, and Words, from a one-line anniversary notice to a full essay.
