Developed concept of communicating automata in his Ph.D. thesis in 1962 (later referred to as Petri nets). Afterwards department head at GMD (Gesellschaft fuer Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung) in Birlinghofen; now part of Fraunhofer organization.
