Bio/Description

Professor P V S Rao an active researcher in Computer Science since 1955, has made many contributions to the area of computer synthesis and recognition of human speech. Professor Rao is the author of over fifty original research papers in international professional journals. He has presented over fifty papers in international conferences. He has written popular articles, delivered radio talks and appeared on national and regional television programes on scientific subjects. Professor Rao has been and is a leading member of many Computer and Electronics Associations and Committees in India and abroad. He is recipient of the Padma Shri (1987) from the President of India (this is comparable to Knighthood in UK) and many other coveted awards in the area of Computer Science and Electronics. He received the millennium medal of IEEE in the year 2000. He was the Regional Distinguished Visitor of IEEE Computer Society for Region 10 (Japan and South East Asia) for the year 1981-82. He was also the Chairman of IEEE India Council. He retired as Senior Professor and Head of the Computer Systems and Communications Group at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay. He is also the recipient of DISTINGUISHED FELLOWS OF THE INSTITUTION OF ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERS in 1997 [2], Prof PVS Rao was in charge of Air Defense Ground Environment Systems (ADGES) and Army Radio Engineering Network (AREN) two of the prestigious projects of national interest[3] and the winner of VASVI Industrial Research Award [4]
