Bio/Description

Leader of Microsoft Research's Sensing and Energy Research Group (SERG), Liu has conducted fundamental and applied research in sensing and energy-efficient computing with applications in sensor networks, data centers, and mobile computing. His research interests lie in understanding and managing the physical properties of computing. Examples include timing, location, energy, and the awareness of and impact on the physical world. Liu has worked on actor-oriented modeling, simulation, programming models, low power network protocol designs, resource management and control, mobile context extraction and management, and novel mobile and cloud applications. His projects have ranged from sensor networks, mobile computing, and data centers.

Before joining MSR in May 2004, he worked as a researcher at Palo Alto Research Center (formerly Xerox PARC). From 2008, Liu also held an adjunct professorship (Foreign PhD Advisor) at Harbin Institute of Technology, China. He received his Ph.D. degree from EECS, UC Berkeley in 2001, and his Masters (1996) and Bachelors (1993) degrees from the Department of Automation, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He became a Distinguished Scientist of ACM in 2011.

Liu received the Exceptional Student Award (the highest student award) from Tsinghua University in 1996, the Leon O. Chua Award for outstanding research from UC Berkeley in 2001, the Technology Advance Award from PARC in 2003, and the Gold Star Award from Microsoft in 2008. From 2008 to 2011, he served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Mobile Computing. He has served as TPC co-Chair for IEEE PerCom (2012), General Chair for ACM SenSys (2011), General co-Chair for PerCom (2011), TPC co-Chair for SenSys (2009) and IPSN/SPOT (2008), founding co-Chair for PhoneSense (2010), and co-Chair of FeBID (2009). Liu has also served on various NSF review panels, on the TPC of conferences such as SenSys, IPSN, RTAS, RTSS, ICDCS, DAC, and DATE, and as a reviewer for various journals.

Among the many publications he authored or co-authored are: "Cuanta: Quantifying Effects of Shared On-chip Resource Interference for Consolidated Virtual Machines", in ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing (SOCC), ACM, 27 October 2011, with Sriram Govindan, Aman Kansal, and Anand Sivasubramaniam; "LEAP: A Low Energy Assisted GPS for Trajectory-Based Services", in 13th ACM International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp), ACM, 17 September 2011, with Heitor S. Ramos, Tao Zhang, Bodhi Priyantha, and Aman Kansal; and "Power Budgeting for Virtualized Data Centers", in 2011 USENIX Annual Technical Conference (USENIX ATC '11), USENIX, 15 June 2011, with Harold Lim and Aman Kansal.
