Bio/Description

Recipient of the IEEE ISPLC2006 Achievement award for his contributions to Power Line Communications, Vinck has also held a chair for Digital Communications at the Institute for Experimental Mathematics at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Vinck studied electrical engineering at the University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1980. He joined the University of Essen as a professor in Digital Communications starting in 1990.

From 1991-1993, 1998-2000, 2006-2008, he served as director of the Institute for Experimental Mathematics in Essen. Vinck served as director (1997-1999) of the Post-Graduate School on Networking, "CINEMA".

From 2000-2004 he served as chairman for the communication division of the Institute for Critical Infrastructures (CRIS). He started (Essen, 1997) and supported the organization of the series of conferences on Power Line Communications and its Applications, ISPLC.

In 2006 Vinck received the IEEE ISPLC2006 Achievement award in Orlando (FL, USA) for his contributions to Power Line Communications and for facilitating the transition of ISPLC to a fully financially and technically sponsored IEEE Communications Society conference. The SA-IEE annual award was presented to him for the best paper published in the SA-IEE Africa Research Journal in the year 2008. He has served on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society from 1997 until 2006, and was elected president of the IEEE Information theory Society in 2003.

Vinck served as founding Chairman (1995-1998) of the IEEE German Information Theory chapter. IEEE elected him in 2006 as a fellow for his "Contributions to Coding Techniques".

He has been co-founder and president of the Shannon Foundation and the Gauß Foundation. These foundations stimulated research and help young scientists in the field of Information theory and Digital Communications.

He has served as a distinguished lecturer for the Information theory as well as for the Communications society of the IEEE.
